She was born Ellen Page and became famous as the lead actress in the movie “Juno.” But as of this Tuesday she has asked to be called by her new name.
The 33-year-old actor announced through a statement on social networks that he is transgender: “I feel lucky to write this. To be here. To have reached this point in my life,” he wrote.
He said he couldn’t help but express “how extraordinary it feels to finally love who I am, enough to pursue my authentic self.”
“I love being trans. And I love being queer,” he wrote in the note posted on Twitter.
Aged 33, a native of Canada, Page gained worldwide fame for the role of the pregnant teenager starring in “Juno,” a film by ls that received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 2008.
Other important films in his career are “The Origin” (Inception, 2010) and the X-Men series. And more recently the series “The Umbrella Academy”.
Page came out as gay in 2014, when she told an audience in Las Vegas: “I’m tired of hiding and I’m tired of lying by omission.”
“I am also afraid”
In his post on Tuesday, Page addressed the issue of discrimination against trans people.
“The truth is that, despite feeling deeply happy at this moment and knowing how privileged I am, I am also afraid. I am afraid of meddling, hatred, ‘jokes’ and violence,” he wrote.
“To be clear, I am not trying to stop a moment that is joyous and celebratory, but I want to address the whole picture,” he said.
Addressing the trans community, Page said he would “do whatever he can to change this world for the better.”
The actor, who is married to choreographer Emma Portner, has been a prominent advocate for LGBT rights.
His announcement has unleashed a huge wave of support.
“Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on screen and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people,” said Nick Adams, director of trans media for advocacy group GLAAD.
“He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the opportunity to be ourselves and be accepted for who we are. Today we celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page.”
“We are very proud of our superhero,” Netflix officials wrote on their Twitter account.
