Egan Bernal publicly reappeared by accepting a short interview that the ESPN channel made him during the transmission of stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia. In his statements, the Ineos team cyclist surprised many by confirming what was the cause of the back problems he suffered in August and September.

The 2019 Tour de France champion has one leg longer than the other. That condition affected his spine and also one of the important nerves in his lower back.

“I have one leg longer than the other. This caused him to have a scoliosis in the spine and a disc in the spine could puncture a nerve that supplies the gluteus. You cannot do surgery, but rehabilitation with the physiotherapist, try to lower the inflammation, then strengthen the lumbar area so that the back can hold that disc and put it in its place, ”Bernal assured in his dialogue with that television channel.

The Zipaquireño also clarified that his full recovery will take a long time. Fortunately for him, the cycling season is coming to an end and he will have several months off to focus on his health.

“It is quite a long process and it won’t be a month or two, but a long time to be pain free again”, Bernal concluded.

The Colombian is in Monaco carrying out the necessary physiotherapy work to advance little by little in his recovery. In recent weeks, he had shown on his social networks the medical examinations and tests he underwent to find out the cause of his physical discomfort.

Egan also assured that he is mentally well after his retirement on the last Tour and that he is clear that he cannot remain regretting that situation for much longer because several professional challenges are coming for him.
