He studied medicine at the University of Caldas, where he met his wife Martha Gallego, with whom he had 4 children: Mauricio (Cardiovascular Surgeon), Martha Liliana (Bacteriologist), Carlos Alberto (Internist) and Ana Milena (General Physician).

Salgar specialized in General Surgery at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in the 70’s, under the guidance of that great surgeon, Dr. Joaquín Abello Peñaranda, from whom he also learned digestive endoscopy, knowledge that he later perfected with various courses. update national and international.

He initially founded the San José Emergency Clinic in 1974, which later became the base for the construction and provision of the San José Clinic, which he consolidated with the support of his brother, the engineer Álvaro Salgar. La San José is today one of the most recognized health entities in the city. Currently, Édgar Salgar served as the Scientific Director of the Clinic.
