Distressing testimony of a cyclist hit by a Porsche in Barbosa, Santander

A week after the video was released showing the death of Jose Antonio Duarte, on the roads of Chía, this October 19 a new incident was recorded in Santander that was recorded on video, in which he was compromised a reckless driver and an athlete on a bicycle, identified as Jaime Lizcano.

In the video, recorded from the vehicle that served as an escort to a cyclist, it is appreciated how after a few fragments of the route, in flat sections and downhill, a high-end sports car brand Porsche bursts from the opposite lane to overtake the caravan, which was traveling along the roads of Barbosa, Santander, according to those who broadcast the video in groups of cyclists.

“The moment I feel that they hit the back, that is, I feel the blow of the two cars, I feel the braking and I am in shock. Then I try to turn to look and the car hits me and throws me into the ditch, “said the affected cyclist, Jaime Lizcano in Noticias Caracol.

The images reveal various details. The rider takes several curves in a downhill position on the handlebars while his escort vehicle remains about 15 meters away. When you take one of the curves to the right, always in the correct lane, you can see how a red car (which would also be a Porsche) sprints out of the curve to make the pass.

Immediately after, another vehicle White colored Porsche license plates ZZO 822 Apparently he does not get the transfer and collides laterally with the escort vehicle. The accident, at full speed, caused the Porsche to skid for about 100 meters and hit the cyclist, who was hit hard but sideways.

“My father!”, is heard in the torn voice of one of the occupants of the escort vehicle. The screams of anguish show how close the cyclist came to death. Seconds later, the athlete recovers and looks conscious, his relatives get off to help him and call the emergency department. The driver of the Porsche gets out unscathed and flails as if complaining about another driver’s maneuvering. However, the video clearly shows that both sports cars double-passed, which is prohibited, and did so at high speed.

“Thank God I have no fractures, only scrapes, lacerations, waves, but basically I’m fine, thank God,” said the cyclist.

“You feel terror and you don’t know where you are, because I started flying but I didn’t know how it’s going to end, yes? I go back and say, grateful to God because he saved my life and I am miraculously here, “said Lizcano.

Users in networks also criticized the attitude of another cyclist who passed through the scene immediately after the accident, but did not seem interested in what had just happened with one of his colleagues on the road.

The cyclist is known to have already left the hospital and is in good health, largely thanks to the protection of his helmet and the presence of the vehicle that was escorting him.

Grim statistical outlook

Just a week ago, Colombian Egan Bernal, 2019 Tour de France champion, complained about the irresponsibility of some drivers, such as the one who took the life of José Antonio Duarte, in Chía. Other road cyclists such as Rigoberto Urán have drawn attention from their networks to try to raise awareness about the care of cyclists on the road.

The Cundinamarca Center for Studies and Investigations in Road Safety assures that, so far in 2020, 136 cyclists have been involved in road accidents: 101 were injured and 35 died. The routes with the highest accidents are Route 40-Autosur Bogotá connection, Route 50 at the exit of Calle 13, Route 45 at the exit of the North highway through Chía, Route 50 at the exit of La Calera and Route 40C at the Chipaque-Usme exit.

In commemoration of the victims of the accidents, the Mobility Secretariats of Bogotá and Cundinamarca, together with the Security Secretariat, the IDRD, the Citizen Culture Directorate and the Traffic Police will hold today, a holiday Monday, an act of public rejection against violence on the road in the Plaza Principal de Suba.
