The departmental president indicated that the measures are necessary “in order to guarantee the capacity of reaction in the health institutions of the department and take care of the lives of Valle del Cauca residents. The situation we are experiencing in relation to the occupation of ICU beds is alarming.”

This Wednesday, Valle del Cauca reported 1,537 new cases of covid-19 and 22 deaths from the coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections to 129,046 and deaths to 4,058, according to data from the departmental Health Secretariat .

Of the 1,057 ICU beds set up in the department, 427 are occupied by confirmed covid-19 patients, 59 by suspects and 453 by patients with other pathologies. Furthermore, 118 beds are not available due to a lack of sedative and muscle relaxant medications.

As a result of this situation, the ministry in recent days decreed the hospital red alert and suspended scheduled surgeries and diagnostic procedures that require sedation until January 4.

“Without social discipline, all the intentions that we promote will be insufficient in this continuous fight against covid-19 With the arrival of Christmas and the end of the year season, many have neglected individual responsibility,” warned the president, at the same time that invited Valle del Cauca residents to reflect on the current situation.

“Here we must assume our role as citizens at the forefront of the emergency in self-care,” he said.
