Red Sox general manager Chaim Bloom interviewed Urueta for the second time in 10 months for the manager position, sources close to the team indicated.

The 39-year-old Colombian has been an assistant coach (bench coach) for manager Torey Lovullo in Arizona since 2018. He is also the manager of Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Republic winter league and led the Colombian team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

The Red Sox have also interviewed Chicago Cubs third base coach Will Venable and Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Don Kelly, according to The Boston Globe.

Alex Cora, who withdrew from the Red Sox after being suspended by Major League Baseball for his role in the Houston Astros signal theft scandal, is another of the candidates, but cannot be interviewed anywhere until after the World Series that is currently being contested concludes.

Boston, which finished the shortened 60-game season with a 24-36 record, last in the AL East, decided not to keep manager Ron Roenicke, who replaced Cora in January after serving on its coaching staff. It was just before Roenicke’s appointment that the Red Sox interviewed Urueta.
