Despite repeated calls about the danger of chlorine dioxide, there are still doctors who formulate it.
After it became known that a doctor in Bogotá was planning to give chlorine dioxide to several patients with COVID-19, the debate on this type of therapy was rekindled in the country. The absence of scientific evidence and the danger it represents for people who take it, put this substance in the eye of the hurricane, which, despite not being backed by any study that shows its effectiveness or safety, was recommended by professionals in the Health. Given this, several Colombian academic pharmacology experts decided to sign a joint statement warning about the dangers of consuming chlorine dioxide. (See here all the information about coronavirus)
“It is not recognized as a drug by any health agency; likewise, it is not included in a pharmacological standard and to date there is no current application or health registration for any product with this active ingredient, ”they point out, referring to the health alert issued by Invima.
Another section reads: “There is no scientific evidence to support the use of chlorine dioxide as a treatment for COVID-19, or for any disease.”
They also recall the adverse effects that chlorine dioxide consumption can generate: respiratory failure, changes in the electrical activity of the heart, low blood pressure caused by dehydration, acute liver failure, low blood cell count and vomiting, and severe diarrhea.
His recommendation is the same that specialists and health agencies have made in recent days: “We totally discourage its use and urge health professionals and the general community to refrain from recommending its use in patients and for no reason consume or use this substance , as well as reporting to Invima about any adverse event related to its consumption ”.
The statement is signed by Professor Claudia Vaca, from the Center for Thought “Medicines, Information and Power” of the National University; by José Julián López, from the Medicine Information Center of the National University; by Juan Pablo Osorio, president of the Colombian Association of Hospital Pharmaceutical Chemists; by Ángela Caro Rojas, president of the Colombian Association of Pharmacovigilance; by Jorge Machado, president of the Colombian Association of Pharmacology and of the Technological University of Pereira; and by Carlos Calderón, Daniel Ricardo Delgado and Andrés Pérez-Acosta, from the U. del Rosario Observatory on Self-Medication Behavior.
