Claudia López, nominated for the best mayor award 2021 – Bogotá

The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, has been chosen as one of the 32 finalists to win the World Mayor Award 2021 (World Mayor Prize 2021), awarded by the City Mayors Foundation.

The entity elected the mayor of the Colombian capital because they consider that she has had an excellent management in the face of the covid-19 pandemic. As they point out, the presidents were selected “Whose leadership during the covid pandemic has provided their communities with protection and security”.

According to the entity, the nominated leaders demonstrated awareness about the long-term implications of the pandemic, their priority was not economic openness and his main objective was not to return to ‘normality’.

In addition to that, they are rulers who showed ability to protect its population against future disasters of this type – or natural -, thanks to their good management during the health crisis, in which they built “stronger, fairer and greener cities“.

In the same way, they are mandatories that “they have convinced their fellow citizens that they are fighting for a more equal, united and tolerant civic society“.

The mayors shortlisted for the World Mayor’s Award and Honors come from some of the world’s largest metropolises, but also from many small and medium-sized towns and cities.“, they indicate from the City Mayors Foundation.

In this sense, the candidates are part of 21 different countries, of which only three are from cities on the South American continent.

Apart from Claudia López, there are also the mayor of Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina, Horacio Rodríguez, and the president of Guarulhos, in Brazil, Gustavo Henric Costa.

Representing Latin America is also Claudia Sheinbaum, mayor of the Mexico City.

The list also includes the mayors of Washington DC (United States), Milan (Italy), Warsaw (Poland), Delhi (India), Melbourne (Australia), among others.

This award, whose objective is to present the challenges faced by mayors in different parts of the world and highlight their achievements, has been awarded since 2004.

The winner will be defined with the evaluation of experts in urban affairs and also by votes that will be accepted until end of April.
