“We have reached an agreement to postpone next festival, postpone one year“, Virginia Reginato, mayor of the city of Viña del Mar (120 km west of Santiago) told the press after making the decision together with two local television channels with whom she is in charge of organizing the event.

The decision was made before “the concern of all the actors to take care of the health and well-being of the people, due to the sanitary conditions of the pandemic that make it impossible to carry out a massive event, “said a statement from the television stations.

The Viña del Mar Festival takes place annually in February, in the middle of the austral summer, on a stage set up in Quinta Vergara located in the center of this town, where great Spanish-speaking artists such as Julio Iglesias or Luis Miguel have passed, but also English speakers such as Elton John, Morrissey or The Police.

Chile has already postponed other events due to the coronavirus like the Lollapalooza festival and the wide billboard of musical concerts who annually visit this country.

The pandemic has caused in Chile more than 520,000 infections and more than 14,600 deaths since March 3, when the first case was confirmed in the South American nation.
