The outrage of the people in the streets at what happened has been evident. However, in the midst of the protests, there have been episodes of violence that so far, according to the authorities, have left 13 people dead.

The director of the Liberal Party, César Gaviria, spoke on Friday about the latest events in the capital.

In a letter he expressed his feelings of condolence with the families of the young people who died in the midst of the demonstrations and said that “what has happened to them is unprecedented. There can be no explanation or excuse for these violent and criminal episodes.”

He stated that he condemns the use of violence to react against “unprecedented police brutality in recent days,” explaining that this only generates more violence.

In the letter, he is critical of the decisions made by the National Government. On the one hand, he says that the government’s reaction to expressing its willingness to investigate the facts has only had a reaction that generates more indignation. “The answer that ‘we are going to investigate’ is clumsy, wrong and easy,” he says.

The former president (1990-1994) also affirms that at the party’s convention they manifested what he calls the “systematic misuse of the police of this government.” “This is the fourth misguided and inappropriate use of the police that were freed from their responsibilities by the peace process,” he continues.

In his text, he also criticizes the Police and says that the uniformed men are not prepared for the task of controlling citizen protest. He explains that most of the uniformed men are prepared for war against the big cartels and criminal organizations at the highest level.

“The Police are incapable and inept to control the peaceful protest with dangerous infiltrators with a vandal and anarchist vocation. I assure you that in no other country in the world are protesters shot with firearms, even in the worst dictatorships”, writes.

Finally, Gaviria states that the uniformed men should not carry firearms but rather “weapons that stop the violence.” “Even with Esmad, who did not use firearms, we had many problems and even one death,” recalls the former president, referring to the case of the death of Dilan Cruz, the young man who died from the firing of a projectile launched by an agent. of Esmad in the November 2019 demonstrations.

“I do not know who took the dangerous and absurd idea that they should be controlled with military policemen who carry firearms. I do not know who came up with such a nonsense that produced that multitude of deaths and injuries. This cannot happen again. it has made it look like a barbarian country “, he concludes.
