Cartel leader convicted of 12 beheadings had fatal end to coronavirus

Although alias al El gordo May ’did not suffer from illnesses, COVID-19 ended his life in a Jalisco jail.

Moisés Escamilla May, a reference in the Los Zetas cartel, had been in prison for eleven years for a shocking episode: the beheading of twelve people in Cancun.

During his time behind bars, authorities say, he did not suffer from any serious illness. However, he acquired the coronavirus and had to be admitted for respiratory problems.

The battle of Escamilla against COVID-19 lasted only two days. In 48 hours his health condition worsened and he died on May 8.

According to Mexican authorities, 3,465 people have died from the coronavirus and 35,022 have acquired it.

Mexico City is the most affected area with almost 10,000 sick and 800 deceased, followed by the neighboring State of Mexico, with about 6,000 sick and 300 deceased; and the state of Baja California, bordering the United States, with some 1,600 patients and almost 400 fatalities.

May 7 was the day with the most deaths registered in Mexico to date, with 257, and also the one with the highest number of infections, with 1,982.
