(CNN) –– The United States elected Democrat Joe Biden as its 46th president, according to CNN projects. In doing so he leaned toward a veteran figure who has projected calm and compassion, who promised a more empathetic and scientific approach to the pandemic, and who pledged to stabilize American policy after four years of Donald Trump’s chaos in the White House.
Biden, who turns 78 later this month, will become the oldest president when he takes office in January amid the worst public health crisis in 100 years, the deepest economic depression since the 1930s and a national recognition of racism and police brutality that has yet to be resolved.

Kamala Harris will be the first black and Asian-American vice president in the US, and the first woman to hold that role.
Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes place Biden above the 270 electoral votes needed to win.
President-elect Joe Biden issued a statement, saying he is “honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed” in him and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
“With the campaign over, it is time to leave behind anger and harsh rhetoric and unite as a nation,” the statement added.
Harris: “We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let us begin”
Kamala Harris reacted on Twitter to her projected victory.
«This choice is much more than @JoeBiden or me. It is about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it, ”Harris tweeted along with a video.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started, ”he added.
