The city’s Christmas lights will begin to shine from today at 7:00 pm, in an event that will be led by the mayor of Barranquilla, Jaime Pumarejo, in the company of the first Lady, Silvana Puello.
The authorities indicated that, to avoid face-to-face assistance and comply with personal protection regulations against Covid-19, the ignition will be done virtually and people will be able to enjoy it through the Mayor’s social networks.
“Our reality has changed and this year it will be through digital platforms that we will welcome this time. The priority is your health and that of your family. We want us to have the best Christmas at home, taking good care of ourselves, this is not the time to relax, ”said the mayor.
The president expressed his wish that “the magic that characterizes this time will keep us full of hope and with the faith that we will have a 2021 full of dreams. Protecting our seniors and our loved ones is the best gift we can give them ”.
Barranquilla will be illuminated with more than 1,000,000 led lights that will be in 12 streets, roads and avenues, as well as in 1 park in each town, and in emblematic spaces that this year, in the midst of the new normal, not only seek keep alive a spirit of hope, but pay tribute to life, care and continue fighting to overcome this crisis in order to enjoy more Christmas parties with loved ones.
This lighting will have representative figures of Christmas, such as banners with angels and stars, bouquets of flowers, Christmas figures and traditional trees, among others, which will shine to cheer and show that they symbolize new paths of trust, optimism and great enthusiasm.
The Mayor’s Office of Barranquilla made a call to citizens so that, in the new circumstances, the spirit of personal self-care may be enlivened with more intensity.
“If you are going to get to know the Christmas lighting, it is essential to follow all biosafety protocols. Let us remember that Covid-19 is here and among all of us, complying with self-care measures, we are going to defeat it, ”said Pumarejo.
They recalled that visits or tours of the route of lights must be carried out in compliance with biosecurity measures, so they should always wear and use the mask correctly, maintain physical distance and not cause crowds.
For his part, the manager of Public Lighting of Barranquilla (APBAQ), Carlos Sarabia, explained that more than a million led Christmas lights have been installed in the city so that all Barranquilla residents and visitors can enjoy these spaces.
“When we take our walk through the city we will find many surprises in our traditions that will give us light, color and renew our Christmas spirit so that on this date health and family care are the best gift,” said Sarabia.
Tribute to life on the Gran Malecón
The authorities explained that in this 2020, the great universe of Christmas will be lived in a special way with lighting that will invite you to travel through various worlds. The lights will be turned on on the banks of the Magdalena River, paying homage to life and inviting reflection and gratitude.
The great universe will take you through worlds distributed in different areas of the Great Malecón. The entrance will be through streets 72 and 78, with a path of stars aligned that will illuminate the arrival of visitors.
The world of hope will be located from the Puerta de Oro sector to the beginning of the Caimán del Río gastronomic market. Here a tribute will be made to the memory of the victims of Covid-19, remembering that, despite being a year of challenges, it was also a year to give thanks for health and family unity.
In this space the light of the town of Bethlehem will shine, a spiritual and reflection corner, in front of the manger, which will have a dynamic of contemplation and appreciation.
“It has been a difficult year, with distressing moments, and from today Barranquilla will light up and begin to shine, but for that we must be responsible and to enjoy this Christmas route. We must be responsible and know that among all of us we must take care to avoid more infections, ”said the APBAQ manager.
