Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico, reported on the night of this Sunday, January 24, that he tested positive for covid-19.

“I regret to inform you that I am infected with covid-19. The symptoms are mild but I am already under medical treatment. As always, I am optimistic. We will all move forward. Dr. Olga Sánchez Cordero will represent me in the morning to report how we do it every day, “said the president.

López Obrador said that he will be attentive to the country’s affairs from the National Palace.

“For example, tomorrow I will take a call with President Vladimir Putin because, regardless of friendly relations, there is a possibility that the Sputnik V vaccine will be sent to us“he added.

This same Sunday, López Obrador participated in the inauguration of a National Guard facilities in the state of San Luis Potosí together with the state governor, Juan Manuel Carreras, and the secretaries of Security, Rosa Icela Rodríguez; from the Navy, Rafael Ojeda; and of the National Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval.

On Saturday he was on tour in the state of Nuevo León where he also met with the governor, Jaime Rodríguez. In none of his acts did the president wear a mask, as López Obrador has refused to wear it in public since the beginning of the pandemic and months ago he resumed his tours of Mexican territory.

During the week he has also had meetings with various members of his cabinet, such as the chancellor, Marcelo Ebrard, with whom he was on Friday during the call with the president of the United States, Joe Biden.

“My best wishes for the prompt restoration of our president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He will go forward,” published on Twitter Ebrard, one of many ministers who expressed their support for the president after hearing the news.

The Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, who has already passed the covid-19, was convinced that López Obrador will come out “well” thanks to his “strength, conviction and love for life”.

“I sincerely wish the president a speedy recovery,” said former president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), López Obrador’s political rival.

Mexico accumulates 1.7 million sick and rubs l150,000 deaths after a week in which three records of infections and daily deaths have been chained. With these data, it is the fourth country in the world in number of deaths, behind the United States, Brazil and India, according to John Hopkins University.
