One died at the station, while the others died days later in health centers.

After the councilor pointed out that apparently the police who were in the place did not take measures to protect the detainees and prevent the tragedy, the General Prosecutor’s Office ruled on the investigation into this case.

Following the complaint for these events, which occurred in the CAI San Mateo jail in Soacha, the Attorney General’s Office assured that this Wednesday the Delegate for Citizen Security will meet with the Director of the Cundinamarca Section to talk about the case.

The Cundinamarca Police said in a statement that on September 4 in the detained room of the San Mateo Police Station (Soacha), “11 people who were deprived of liberty in that place had decided to set fire to their mats and thereby generating a deflagration. As a consequence of these events, all of the alleged perpetrators were injured with first and second degree burns. “
.
He added that the station police officers proceeded to control the fire and transfer the injured to medical centers. Of these, the Police say, eight died, two are in custody with medical treatment and one still remains
hospitalized.

In that meeting it was found that, in effect, there was overcrowding in several police stations of the department since in many of them people were detained who had not been able to be transferred because they had not been tested for covid-19, which was one of the measures required in the prison protocol due to the pandemic.

For this reason, the Ombudsman’s Office assured that a letter to Inpec and the Ministry of Justice came out of that meeting to expedite the tests with the Ministry of Health and to make the transfers of people who were detained in several CAIs of Cundinamarca to different prisons .
