At the age of 69, the founder of the Mercacentro supermarket chain, Carlos José Alvarado, died in Ibagué, as a result of a serious respiratory condition that had severely complicated his state of health in recent months.

The well-known businessman became one of the greatest generators of employment in the entire history of the department and over the years managed to consolidate a brand that not only established itself in the region, but also gained national prestige for its significant positioning.

Its beginnings

Carlos Alvarado was born in Silvania, Cundinamarca, where he lived until he was 9 years old, and after carrying out different jobs he moved to the city of Medellín to work as an informal messenger for a group of soldiers.

His presence in Tolima began with an agricultural activity that he initially exercised in Planadas. However, after showing a series of shortcomings in the commercial offer of that population, he decided to expand the purchase and sale of products until his transfer in 1987 to Ibagué.

The birth of Mercacentro

With the vision of a great entrepreneur, Don Carlos bought the lot on Calle 14 with Carrera 1a, where the Mercacentro brand was born. Since then, his business idea became a forceful reality that quickly led him to open new points, and therefore, employ more people.

Ecos del Combeima mourns the death of Carlos Alvarado and accompanies his family in grief. Peace on the grave of one of the most important men for the economic development of the department.

The unfortunate statement

The Asotrauma Clinic published a statement at 4:30 in the morning in which it reported that around 3:28 am, Carlos Alvarado lost his life in the Intensive Care Unit. “A hug of condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren and the entire Mercacentro family,” wrote the health center.
