Yates, winner of the Vuelta de España in 2018, was one of the candidates for the pink ‘jersey’ and is the first competitor to test positive for the coronavirus in the Giro (and in one of the two Grand Tours that go in the year) since its beginning, on October 3.
Yates had mild symptoms after the end of the seventh stage, played on Friday with the finish line in Brindisi, the Australian team said:
“The medical team immediately requested a rapid test which gave a positive result,” Mitchelon added in a statement. “A second test, RT-PCR, was carried out, which confirmed the positive result,” he explained.
Yates was isolated in his individual room during the process and was later transported by ambulance to the place where he will remain in quarantine.
“The riders and staff were also subjected to a quick test and all gave negativeo ”, said the Mitchelon, one of the 19 that are part of the WorldTour.

After rigorous tests, the other riders on the team were allowed to continue in the race, but they will have to undergo further tests in the coming days.
Simon Yates, 28, ranked 21st in the general classification, 3 minutes and 52 seconds behind the Portuguese Joao Almeida, after falling behind on the climb to Etna in the third stage.
Yates had been the leader and partner of the Bogota-born Esteban Chaves in the Tour de France, which was completed without any runners being infected.
