The Colombian Association of Critical Medicine and Intensive Care (AMCI) denounced this Thursday that a doctor, a member of the board of directors of that union, received death threats from the family of a patient he treated and who died of covid-19.

The AMCI revealed that Dr. María Cristina Florián, internist and intensivist and coordinator of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Santa Sofía Hospital in Manizales, was threatened with death after the patient she was treating died after five days in critical condition.

“This patient with a preexisting immunodeficiency disease arrived at the institution in severe respiratory distress and coinciding with his death, 5 days after the test was taken, the official positive PCR result arrived, which the family claims was adulterated,” indicates the union.

The deceased patient was a cohabiting member of a respiratory symptomatic family member and without a confirmed diagnosis

“The deceased patient was living with a member of the family with respiratory symptoms and without a confirmed diagnosis,” adds the statement from the AMCI.
This situation of physical and psychological aggression, according to the intensivists, “adds to the suffering, fears and adverse work environment of the human talent of UCI”.

Doctors point out as the cause of this type of threats to the “Loss of confidence promoted by irresponsible and, until now, unproven reports of criminal acts associated with management in ICUs and the lack of opportunity in delivering the results of the diagnostic tests ”, which after several months of the pandemic and despite the installed capacity continue to take several days.

We categorically reject this type of criminal behavior already entrenched in the culture of our society and favored by the recklessness of improperly justified public complaints. how much damage they have caused to the dignity of those who have saved the lives of at least 12,000 Colombians in intensive care ”, the note highlights.

“Finding María Cristina Florián outside the ICU is a miracle, she is dedicated to her patients all the time,” says José Luis Accini, president of the AMCI, who also says that the doctor is an impeccable professional and teacher.

Accini also clarifies, regarding the reason for the threat, that the family’s response is unexpected and criticizes the fact that people continue to believe that health professionals make changes in diagnoses.

“What interest do we have in changing the label? It is crazy to say that there are bonuses for patients who join the unit. The intensivists earn salaries from contracts to provide services,” he explains.

The president of the association assured that the authorities are already aware of the threat and that with this case the story of doctor José Buelvas is repeated, who was threatened with death in June of this year after receiving two funeral arrangements, one in his home and another at your workplace.

The AMCI asked the Superintendency of Health to reveal whether criminal acts have been found in the country’s ICUs and asks the Attorney General’s Office to investigate this and other threats made against medical personnel.

The management of the public hospital Santa Sofía also rejected the attack against the doctor Florián.
