The vallenato has had to fire several of its representatives because of accidents, crimes or diseases that have caused their death.
We remember the deaths of some of the great personalities of this iconic musical genre.

Rafael Orozco
In June 1992, two musicians from Diomedes Díaz’s group went to find Rafael Orozco at his house to ask him to borrow some musical instruments. The singer led the men to the terrace. While they were talking, a man entered, who shot Orozco 10 times, killing him. The above according to a report from EL TIEMPO of that date.
The artist was transferred to the Clínica del Caribe, in Barranquilla, however, he no longer had vital signs.

In 1998, the Fourth Criminal Court of Barranquilla determined that it was a crime of passion, since the singer, who was married to Clara Elena Cabello, had an extramarital relationship with María Angélica Navarro, who was wanted by the drug trafficker José Reinaldo Fiallo.

In the sentence, it was established that the intellectual actor of the crime was Fiallo, while Sergio González, his bodyguard, was the one who shot the singer, who performed songs such as ‘Lariente’ and ‘Muere una flor’.
Kaleth morales
On August 23, 2005, Kaleth Morales was in the company of his brother Keyner in a truck on the road that connects Cartagena with Valledupar, after giving a concert in the walled city.
The young man, Recognized for hits like ‘Vivo en el limbo’ and ‘Todo de cabeza’, he was driving when he lost control of the car.
The vehicle overturned and the brothers were transferred to a health center in Plato, Magdalena. They were later referred to the Bocagrande Hospital in Cartagena, both in a coma.

One day after the accident, Kaleth died. Keyner managed to come out of the coma and recover.
Kaleth did 10 semesters of medicine at the Universidad del Sinú in Cartagena and at the same time he devoted himself to musical composition.
Artists such as Los Diablitos, Los Gigantes del Vallenato, and Silvestre Dangond recorded several of his songs and in 2004 ‘Vivo en el Limbo’ positioned him as one of the main figures of the new wave of vallenato.

Patricia Tehran
The vocalist of ‘Las diosas del vallenato’ died in 1995 in a traffic accident on the Barranquilla-Cartagena road. This occurred due to the explosion of one of the tires of the vehicle in which she was traveling.
With her was also Víctor Sierra, her husband and representative, who also passed away.
Patricia is remembered for being one of the main female representatives of the genre. The song ‘Tarde lo met’ is one of her biggest hits.

Martin Elijah
After giving a concert in Coveñas, Sucre, the truck in which Martín Elías was traveling was the protagonist of a traffic accident registered on a road near the town of Aguas Negras, Córdoba, on April 14, 2017.
According to the medical report, the singer died from injuries that the accident left him, which affected his skull, abdomen, thorax and extremities. In addition, he had several repetitive cardiac arrests and altered state of consciousness.
In 2018, the Prosecutor’s Office charged Armando Quintero, the driver of the truck, with speeding before the accident.

Because Quintero denied the charges, in July 2020 the preparatory hearing was held in which the Prosecutor’s Office determined that the truck was going 116 kilometers per hour at the time of the crash.

Martín Elías was the youngest of the children of the marriage between Diomedes Díaz and Patricia Acosta.

Diomedes Diaz
‘El cacique de la Junta’ died in December 2013, after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest while resting in his room.
With a musical tribute, his children and friends said goodbye to one of the most important exponents of vallenato. Further, Thousands of followers also attended the event that took place in the Plaza Alfonso López, in Valledupar.
In that ‘last goodbye’ Rafael Santos and Martín Elías, their children, and other artists such as Jorge Oñate, Iván Villazón, Peter Manjarres, Iván Zuleta and Silvestre Dangond appeared.

Later, relatives of the singer took the coffin to the Jardines del Ecce Homo cemetery, where he was buried next to his father Rafael Díaz.
Diomedes Díaz recorded more than 40 albums during his career, the first was released in 1976 with Elberto López and his ensemble, while the last came out in 2011.
He established himself as one of the main artists of the genre and in 2010 he won the Grammy for best cumbia / vallenato album.
‘Without measuring distances’, ‘You are the queen’, ‘Wounded seagull’ and ‘Colorful snails’ are some of his most memorable hits.

Martin Maestre
In 1979, Martín Maestre was traveling in a pickup truck in the company of the guacharaquero Cacique Pillayo and Diomedes Díaz, who were driving the vehicle.
Diomedes, who was Maestre’s nephew, “He did not see that there was an unmarked pile of asphalt and he got on it, which caused Martín and Pillayo to get out of the vehicle due to the impact ”, commented Joaco Guillen, one of Diomedes’s former representatives to the Diomedes Diaz web portal.

Mao Medina
Mauricio Medina, a young promise of vallenato, had a plane accident that caused his death, in October 2019.
With him was Mauricio Medina Castro, his father and manager, who also lost his life in the incident.
Mateo Barbosa, the singer’s accordionist, was the one who broke the news through his social networks.
Mao Medina is remembered for songs like ‘My friend the drink’ and ‘I’m sorry’.

Andres Barros
Andrés Felipe Barros twice won the title of King of the Piquería at the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata. The first was in 1995 and the second in 2014.
The artist was admitted to the La Magdalena clinic in his hometown, Barrancabermeja, due to a problem with his spine.. Later, on June 23, 2020, he died at the age of 48, according to various national media reports.

Barros left a legacy in vallenato folklore, as he created the Piquería Festival in Barrancabermeja to give new talents in the genre an opportunity.

Miguel Duran
On September 3, 2020, the news of the death of Miguel Antonio Durán, a renowned Vallenato singer, accordionist and composer, who died due to a bacterium that he acquired while hospitalized, was known.
In principle, the artist was hospitalized for 45 days in a clinic in Sincelejo because of covid-19. However, he managed to get out of intensive care and was transferred to another medical center to finish recovering.
According to the testimony of Jose Luis Durán, the singer’s brother, “To the clinic where he was taken to finish his rehabilitation he acquired a bacteria. We got him out of there and decided to admit him to the Social Health Clinic, but the miracle could not be done, ”he told EL TIEMPO.
Song ‘Pelao Pocket’.
Durán is known songs like ‘La camisa rayá’, and ‘elillera pelao’, in which he mixed rhythms such as fandango and merengue. The artist’s last album was released in 2020 under the title ‘Let the women kill me’, in which the singer dedicated a song to the pandemic.
Hernando Marin
‘The growing’ is one of the best known vallenato hits of the genre. Hernando Marín, its composer, died in a traffic accident in 1999.
Marín was traveling in a taxi that moved around the El Bongo crossing in Sucre. The driver lost control of the vehicle and went off the road, which caused the death of this vallenata figure.
The composer’s work includes several songs for the Binomio de Oro, Peter Manjarres, Jorge Oñate and Diomedes Díaz.
