The final semester students of medicine at the University of Pamplona ask to anticipate their graduation date in order to support as professionals the current health crisis caused by COVID-19.
This request was made after the Colombian Medical College suggested last March 29 “anticipated degree of the inmates who are about to finish.”
Other universities in the country, such as the University of La Sabana, the Cooperative University of Colombia (UCC) and the University of Rosario have already taken this suggestion into account. in order to support this contingency situation with more health professionals.
In the framework of the pandemic and taking into account the suggestion of the Colombian Medical College, in April of this year 1,100 final semester students will graduate in Colombia who are part of the medical faculties grouped in the Colombian Association of Medical Faculties, Ascofame .
Of the 49 students who attend the so-called rotary internship II, in their last semester of medicine, 41 want to join this figure and anticipate their graduation, the remaining eight chose to continue with the practices.
The application presented by the students is being studied by various committees of the University of Pamplona who have been evaluating its feasibility and it is expected that on Monday of next week they will be given a final response.
Heriberto Rangel, dean of the Faculty of Health of the University of Pamplona, affirmed that the criteria taken into account to approve this application are, having completed basic clinical rotations, completing at least nine weeks of internship II rotation and for Lastly, the administrative procedures required by the university.
According to Rángel, the applicants meet the first two criteria and are waiting for the university’s response, which is who approves the last criterion.
If said request is approved, the future doctors will be able to occupy the compulsory social service positions that will be assigned in May and in this way they will be integrated and will be able to support the Colombian health system in this coronavirus pandemic.
