In the midst of the health emergency caused by COVID-19, the San José del Guaviare municipal prison received a donation of kits to avoid contagion among the inmates. One of the elements inside was ethyl alcohol. On May 4, prisoners in one cell were reported to be upset. When the authorities reviewed the situation, they found that the detainees had ingested alcohol.

“At night we received information that a fight had occurred in the municipal jail. That day a donation of the emergency kits had been made to the approximately 130 prisoners in the jail. Among the elements there was ethyl alcohol and, apparently, they misused it because they gave it with fruit and took it, “said Carolina Galeano, municipal staff.

The prison director, Justo Macías, told The viewer that the kits contained a small bottle of alcohol and that it was delivered with the appropriate recommendations: “It was a disinfection kit, we told them what they should use them for, but in one cell they made a combination and took it”. He said that the Ombudsman, the Ombudsman and the Police arrived at the prison to attend to the situation.

According to Galeano, the prisoners were attacking one of the inmates in the cell with the sticks on the bed. Security personnel realized what was happening and tried to control the situation. One of the guards was slightly injured when an object was thrown at him from inside the cell.

“The accompaniment was carried out. The injured inmate went to the hospital, that same day he was discharged. When I went at 11:00 at night they were very upset, but the situation was already controlled, “added Galeano. He also said that fortunately there was no poisoning.

Macías affirmed that all the inmates are well. Even so, tomorrow a health brigade will be held with the EPS. “On social networks they have said that the security guard was hospitalized, but it is false,” he added.
