The Colombian Association of Internal Medicine (ACMI), specialized in the care of the adult population in the country, launched an alert due to the delicate situation that the medical union and hospitals are experiencing due to the high increase in infections by Covid-19, in response to which it requested toughen restrictive measures and even confinement in cities and regions where the situation is most critical.
In a public statement, the ACMI asks that in the regions with the highest mortality from the virus, such as Atlántico, Antioquia, Bogotá and Valle del Cauca, 14 days of total confinement be declared, “with the aim of reducing contagion and the impact on mortality ”, which in cough sites has reached very high numbers in recent days.
The Association asks to intensify prevention campaigns given the lack of control of the citizens “and the loss of biosafety measures,” says its president, the doctor Tatiana Espinosa Espitia.
It proposes declaring the hospital red alert in cities with a high incidence of infections and occupations of ICU beds not only due to covid but also of the entire hospital network.
For the ACMI, streamlining the vaccination process and providing greater coverage to the population would help alleviate the crisis that has unleashed in the country with the third peak of the pandemic.
“We ask the governors and mayors for their valuable and prompt support to take measures in time, so that together with the entire medical body of the country to overcome this crisis and not wait for a hospital collapse and a greater number of families in mourning.”
The union maintains that it understands the need to reactivate the economy, “but we must be aware of the cost we must pay for this.” Without health and sanitation there will be no economy, says the message of the president of the association, whose members attend to the morbidity of the adult population in ICU and external consultation.
The president of the Medical College of Antioquia, Carlos Valdivieso, spoke in a similar vein, who stressed that given the high occupancy rates of ICU beds in Antioquia and Medellín, it is necessary to implement the referral and counter-referral system to transfer the patients to other cities. Covid-19 patients requiring ICU care.
For this reason, he celebrated the Government’s decision to announce this Saturday the possibility of opening referrals of patients under this condition to cities such as Armenia, Cali, Bucaramanga and Bogotá.
For his part, another who spoke out on the matter was the president of the Antioquia Section of the Trade Union Medical Association -Asmedas-, Germán Reyes Forero, who said that sending patients elsewhere reduces the pressure on the department’s hospital system.
“People are still not taking care of themselves, in the processions and in the crowds. This is very worrying and that is why we make a call to reactivate the mechanisms of manifest urgency ”, he stressed.
