The Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz, announced that from now on he will change the distribution mechanism for the covid-19 vaccines that arrive in the country. The decision was made in the unified command post, advanced this Friday from the city of Barranquilla.
To date, the distribution has been done homogeneously, using a mathematical formula to calculate the number of vaccines according to the population of each municipality.
However, from now on the mechanism will change, because some departments still have an important availability of vaccines in their territories that have not been applied and that occupy the space of the refrigerators of the territory’s cold network.
Now, the distribution will be made according to the vaccination rhythm and the vaccines will be delivered when the department reaches a minimum coverage rate of 50.7% of the doses applied with respect to the doses delivered.
“We found that there are some territorial entities that have distributed all the vaccines that we have delivered to them, but some still have a very important number of vaccines in their cold rooms at their collection centers. Therefore, the distribution formula for the vaccines that are arriving was proposed, in which those departments and districts that are below 50.7% execution will not receive vaccines and these will be delivered to the departments that have expedited vaccination “, the minister explained.

According to the official, this change is taking place in order to advance in vaccination and not to stop vaccination processes in departments that are close to ending their availability of vaccines.
Thus, the territorial entities that will not receive doses at that time are Putumayo, Córdoba, Arauca, Cauca, Sucre, Chocó, Vichada and Buenaventura. For the next distribution, the execution of their Vaccination Plan will be analyzed again and, once they exceed that range, they will receive doses again.
The Minister of Health also announced that after opening stage two of vaccination, it will begin with the vaccination of people between 60 and 79 years old located in long-stay centers and in deprivation of liberty centers. In addition, the IPS will begin scheduling the population between 75 and 80 years of age.
