Former Bolivian President Jeanine Añez arrested for ‘sedition and terrorism’ – Latin America – International

The former Acting President of Bolivia Jeanine Áñez fIt was transferred this March 13 under a strong security device to the headquarters of the Special Force to Fight Crime (FELCC) in La Paz. Áñez was arrested in Trinidad, capital of the Amazonian department of Beni, in an operation headed by the general commander of the Bolivian Police, Jhonny Aguilera, and transferred to La Paz in a Hercules plane of the Bolivian Air Force. She is accused of the alleged crimes of sedition and terrorism during the 2019 crisis that resulted in the resignation of Evo Morales from the Presidency.

Del Castillo offered a conference to the media at the FELCC, together with Commander Aguilera and without the presence of the former interim president, in which he pointed out that the arrests corresponding to the “process that began in December 2020 in the case of the coup“.

“Today we have carried out, as required by the laws and the Constitution, the arrest warrant in a process that has followed its entire course and the judicial authorities will continue the investigation and determine the situation of the detained persons,” he said.

The minister recalled that on Friday the former ministers Álvaro Coímbra of Justice and Álvaro Guzmán of Energy were arrested. On Áñez he avoided referring to her as former president and simply said “Former Senator Jeanine Áñez”.

It indicated that these people “would have conspired” and committed “crimes of sedition”. Since the afternoon of March 12, police officers and the Prosecutor’s Office remained outside Áñez’s residence in the city of Trinidad, to proceed to the arrest of the ex-president and until now her whereabouts were unknown.

Other former presidents of Bolivia have shown their rejection of the decision of the Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office. Among them are Carlos Mesa and Jorge Quiroga, who supported the arrival of the interim government of Añez in 2019.

She constitutionally replaced Evo Morales after his resignation in November of that year, amid protests after elections described as fraudulent. He served in government until November 2020.
