The victim is the pastor of the Starrville Methodist Church, east of Dallas. The suspect in the shooting is in police custody. According to the local press, the pastor was also armed.

One person died and at least two were injured this Sunday in a shooting that took place at the Starrville Methodist Church, in the town of Winona, Texas.

“Our hearts go out to the victims and families of those killed or injured in this terrible tragedy,” State Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement.

The suspect in the shooting has been arrested by the security forces and remains in police custody.

“He started walking toward the front door, then he turned and lunged for the pastor,” said Larry Smith, the county sheriff.

Smith added that the pastor was apparently armed, and it was with his gun that the shooter shot him to death.

“It was the pastor’s weapon that he used. The pastor passed away ”, sentenced Smith.

Another person who was shot wounded is being treated. The suspect was captured in Harrison County after escaping in the pastor’s vehicle. He had a gunshot wound on his hand. It is unknown if it was caused during the struggle he had with the pastor.

“The state of Texas is working closely with emergency services and local officials to ensure that justice is served and that the Starrville community has the resources it needs at this time,” Abbott added.

“This is a crime of opportunity for this man, suspect. The church was just here. It could have been one of these houses that he entered, but he knew there were people there … I think he probably came there to seek shelter, ”Smith said.
