President Iván Duque announced on Tuesday that General Óscar Atehortúa, who had been serving as director general of the National Police since December 2018, is leaving this position. In his replacement comes General Jorge Luis Vargas, who served as director of Citizen Security.
Duque praised Atehortúa’s work as Chief of Police. “Alias Guacho, alias Cadete, alias David, alias Pácora, alias Puntilla and alias Uriel fell,” he said. In addition, he noted that this year closes with the lowest homicide rate in 46 years, the lowest kidnapping rate in nearly four decades, the largest drug seizure and the highest manual eradication.

Likewise, the president highlighted that Atehortúa “has had experience in such important issues as the fight against drug trafficking (…) he was in Dijín working on criminal investigation, he was a regional commander in Córdoba, in the direction of Health.”
For his part, General Vargas was also an inspector general of the National Police, he was in charge of the intelligence department of the same entity and has received recognition for military operations.
“At the head of Citizen Security, there have been significant reductions in crime rates,” said President Duque.

General Jorge Luis Vargas, has been in the National Police for 35 years, and was the Director of Citizen Security.
Among the main tasks that Duque assigned him is to find the most wanted criminals in the country and continue fighting criminals.

Other changes in the leadership of the Police
The president announced that the new deputy director general of the National Police will be General Hoover Alfredo Penilla.
For his part, the Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, asserted that in the position of The inspector general will be Major General Jorge Luis Ramírez, who today is in charge of the anti-narcotics directorate.

Major General Carlos Ernesto Rodríguez, current director of transit and transportation, arrives in the direction of Citizen Security.
In front of the anti-narcotics direction will be Major General Germán Bustamante Jiménez, who is currently in charge of the police department.
Major General Fernando Murillo Orrego, current anti-kidnapping director, will be in Dijín.
