It was twelve o’clock in the afternoon and the boats were just arriving in search of tourists in the north of El Rodadero, in Santa Marta. The arsonist skirts the boats, fills them with gasoline and from one moment to another the fire consumes the boats.
“I see him who is spraying the gasoline with the tank and I say to him ‘aha and what happened, what are you doing?’ and I push him and I even take the tank off him because he wanted to turn on himself and he says ‘no, nothing, and what?’, all arrogant, “said boatman Edwin López.
The strong breeze and the high temperature caused the fire to spread more quickly. From nearby buildings you could see the height of smoke and flames. Panic seized tourists and boatmen.
“People run and throw off the boat with dirt, water and a fire extinguisher,” said boatman Luis Gómez.
Meanwhile, Wílliam Vides, boat dispatcher, stated that “there was a fairly high flame.”
“We all proceeded to look for water and sand, and what all the boatmen did was put out the fire,” he said.
The Police, in a swift action, captured the alleged perpetrator of this act that put the lives of several people at risk.
“He is of foreign nationality, who minutes before had propitiated the incineration of two boats, boat type, in the north cabinet of El Rodadero,” said Colonel Óscar Solarte, commander of the Santa Marta Police.
The foreigner will be brought before a guarantee control judge and Legal Medicine will determine if the captured person has mental health problems.
