The data notified with a cut-off at 4 in the afternoon of this holiday Tuesday represents a decrease of 29.5 percent with respect to those reported in 2019, when for these same dates a total of 159 injured were confirmed on days 7 and 8 of December.

However, the INS is clear that the figure should be updated as the territorial entities make their notifications, so these numbers “are worrying, since they are all avoidable injuries and should not occur.”

In the historical report of this celebration, INS surveillance data show that in the last seven years some 961 Colombians were injured with gunpowder on those dates.

For the director of the INS, Martha Lucía Ospina, when averaging the numbers of gunpowder injuries in the last 10 years of gunpowder surveillance, the numbers are overwhelming. “In the last ten years we have seen two constant figures every year: 500 adults and 300 children or adolescents burned by gunpowder.”
