aAlthough more than 30 gunpowder burns are already reported in the country, in Santander to date there has not been officially known a single case of children or adults injured by its use or manipulation.
This is the main recommendation made by the authorities for this Night of Candles, not to use fireworks in order to prevent unfortunate situations such as mutilations, deformations or even death in the worst cases.

Amputations, eye damage and hearing damage are some of the effects suffered by those Colombians who this December suffered injuries caused by gunpowder. (See box).
Be careful what you apply to your hands
This year, the authorities issued a special warning due to the application of chemical compounds on the hands that we usually do as prevention against COVID-19.
Citizens must exercise extreme caution when using alcohol and antibacterial gel, to avoid at all costs that these substances come into contact with the flames of the candles that will be lit tonight.
Organisms such as the Floridablanca Authorities point out that “if a person has washed their hands with alcohol or applied antibacterial gel and then comes into contact with fire, their probability of burns is one hundred percent. The reason is one: alcohol is a highly flammable substance ”.
Because in some residential units or complexes there are systems that spray these types of chemicals as a preventive measure, it is also possible that clothing becomes impregnated and can catch fire more easily.
The Police advise citizens to drink responsibly and avoid getting into confrontations that could lead to unfortunate acts of intolerance.
Keep in mind that meetings with more than 10 people are restricted in Bucaramanga, and that the authorities will make controls to counteract the crowds.
In the ‘Ciudad Bonita’ the curfew on this Night of Candles begins at 11:00 pm and will last until 1:00 pm on December 8.
For December 24 and 31, in the capital of Santander there will also be a curfew, which will begin at 11:00 pm and will last until 1:00 pm the next day.

The most recent report from the National Institute of Health, INS, indicates that between December 1 and 6, 2020 there were 31 injuries with gunpowder in the country.
Fortunately so far no fatalities have been reported. However, 10% of the injured suffered amputations, 3% eye damage and another 3% hearing damage. 77% of them suffered significant burns and 61% lacerations.
The so-called totes have caused 32% of the reported injuries, and 29% of the injuries were generated by the manipulation of fliers.
Antioquia accounts for the majority of cases (9), followed by Valle and Córdoba (with 4 each), Norte de Santander (3).
