The Argentine Justice accepted the request that the neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, who attended to Diego Armando Maradona, raised to avoid an eventual arrest in the case investigating the death of the star, on November 25, sources from the Prosecutor’s Office in charge of the case announced this Friday to Efe.

Luque is in the crosshairs of the investigation that seeks to determine if there was any type of negligence surrounding the death of the former soccer player and both his home and his medical office were searched to collect material that allows progress on whether a homicide could have occurred guilty or abandonment of person.

The apartment and the office of Agustina Cosachov, the psychiatrist who treated Maradona, were also searched, although for now neither of the two doctors have been formally charged.

Luque’s defense had presented the judge with a request for exemption from prison for his client, which was later expanded with a document that was released in local media in which the doctor insisted that “Maradona decided for himself and constantly broke the tacit contracts with his professionals”.

On the morning of Monday, Luque, who on November 3 had operated on the former footballer for a brain hematoma, an intervention that the doctor said was successful, decided to appear at the Prosecutor’s Office, in the Buenos Aires municipality of San Isidro, to find out about their situation.

Luque did not take a statement as he was not formally accused. At the time Maradona was hospitalized, Luque was the main person in charge of transmitting the medical reports to the press and in the media he was presented as his family doctor, something that has been denied by the neurosurgeon himself and now, after death, is the subject of controversy due to the alleged responsibility that he should assume regarding his general state of health.

“If I am responsible for Diego for something, it was to love him, to take care of him, to extend his life and improve it to the last. I am responsible for that. I did the impossible for that”Luque declared tearfully last Sunday. Maradona, who for years had a long history of addictions and health problems, died of a cardiorespiratory arrest in the house in the province of Buenos Aires to which on November 11 he had been transferred to recover from the intervention, and, according to investigation, he died alone in the room where he slept.

In the last days, the debate was implanted as to whether “el ten” was properly attended to in his last days and hours of life and the conditions in which he was in the property were questioned. Mario Baudry, legal representative of Maradona’s youngest son, Diego Fernando, who was born in 2013 as a result of his relationship with Verónica Ojeda, considered that Maradona’s death “was avoidable”.

“We are going to request that all those who participated in Diego’s care be investigated to the end and the last consequences in the event that there was an abandonment of person,” said the lawyer at the doors of the Prosecutor’s Office last Monday.
