The labor unions presented this Friday a first joint proposal on the adjustment of the minimum wage for 2021 which, according to the unions, must be above $ 1,000,000.

(“The minimum wage must serve to activate the economy”).

The Central Unitary of Workers (CUT), the General Confederation of Workers (CGT), the CTC and the confederations of pensioners CPC and CDP, gathered in the Unitary National Command, proposed that the established salary adjustment be of 1 million pesos, plus $ 120,000 of transportation assistance for a total of $ 1,120,000.

(Workers’ centrals uncover the first figure to raise the minimum wage).

The request is part of a list of requests, which includes a definition of basic income for those who do not have a minimum wage or have lost jobs; government subsidy for MSMEs and repeal of decree 1174 (social protection floor).

In a statement, the unions stated: “Under the previous proposal, consider the Central Workers and Pensioners, a real and definitive step would be taken in the process of reactivation of the economy after the fall generated by the health and economic crisis, to levels never seen before and that according to the Dane figures are intimately linked to the fall in household consumption. We are convinced that the real possibility of an economic reactivation will only open up “by putting money into the pocket of Colombians, preferably to the lower income sectors and those who do not have them” In this process, the Government must play a fundamental role, which must assume a large part of the requested increase, that is, without economic orthodoxy. It is about saving jobs and companies. “.

Recently, the president of the CGT, Julio Roberto Gómez, called on the business sector and the National Government for a significant increase in order to reactivate the Colombian economy, strongly affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is not by impoverishing the people that the economy is reactivated. By increasing the minimum wage we give more consumption capacity to families,” said the union leader.
The discussions at the tripartite table are about to begin and the Government is expected to present the agenda and how the negotiations will be carried out this year, due to the pandemic.
