Last weekend in the vicinity of Hidalgo, Texas, the Border Patrol detained a group of 17 people, mostly minors. The surprise was greater when among the undocumented they found a 13-year-old Honduran, carrying his little brother, a baby only 7 months old.

According to the authorities, a coyote crossed them on a raft on the Rio Grande and then told them to continue on their way to the United States.

“The agents interviewed a 13-year-old Honduran who was carrying the baby in her arms and learned that their mother had abandoned them three weeks before entering the United States,” describes a statement from the Border Patrol.

“The agents they verified their relationship after the adolescent gave them two birth certificates ”, the authorities added.

The children were in good health and did not require medical attention.

“No parent should put their children at the mercy of criminals“Said Brian Hastings, head of the Border Patrol in the sector, in a trill.

It is not clear what happened to the children, if they were put in some shelter for immigrants or if they were deported to their country.

United States border authorities explain that in recent years parents, especially from Central America, they have chosen to send their children alone to cross considering that they are more protected by the laws and they have a better chance of success in applying for asylum.

Since that March 20, the Border Patrol has expelled 147,601 people, including more than 8,500 children who were traveling alone.
