Deceased in 2016, at the age of 15, after suffering from leukemia, the young Carlo Acutis was beatified by the Catholic Church this Saturday (10) in the Basilica of San Francisco de Assis, in Italy.
The beatification was granted based on a cure that the church claims to recognize as a miracle and that happened in Brazil: a boy from Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul, would have been cured of a congenital disease after touching a Carlo Acutis relic in October 2013.
Called the “good angel of youth”, Carlo Acutis became known in life for doing evangelism on the Internet. He was above average computer literate for his age and created a website to catalog miracles around the world and spread the ideals of the church.
The son of Italian parents, Carlo was born in England, but moved to Italy, where he lived his childhood and youth. There, he approached the church and became a practicing Catholic.
After his death, on October 12, 2006, he began to be worshiped by Catholics, who searched for the young man’s relics in search of miracles. He was declared “venerable” by the Vatican on July 5, 2018.
In Brazil, Father Marcelo Tenório, from the São Sebastião parish, in Campo Grande, used to celebrate an annual mass in honor of Nossa Senhora Aparecida with the display of a relic of Carlo Acutis, a garment with marks of the young man’s blood .
At the mass on October 12, 2013, the boy Matheus Vianna, then 3 years old, was present with his mother and grandfather.
About a year earlier, Matheus had been diagnosed with annular pancreas, a congenital abnormality that makes the patient have difficulty digesting food and causes constant vomiting.
“Matheus was very weak due to the disease, could not eat properly and did not gain weight. He couldn’t have a normal life, he was just surviving, withering away, ”says Matheus’s mother, Luciana Lins Vianna, 40.
At the time, Luciana says, doctors had said there were no alternatives to save him, as the chances of him surviving surgery to try to reverse the disease would be small.
With no alternatives in the medical field, the family began to organize novenas in which they asked for the cure of Matheus.
At the mass in October 2013, Father Marcelo Tenório presented the relic of Carlo Acutis and organized a line for the faithful to say their prayers. On his grandfather’s lap, Matheus made the request: “I want to stop vomiting.”
“We were very moved at that time,” Luciana recalls. She says that when Matheus got home, he asked to eat his brother’s favorite food: rice, beans, steak, and French fries. He chewed, swallowed and did not vomit.
From this day on, the family says, Matheus began to eat normally. He even started eating more than before: “I wanted to eat all the time. One day I found him hiding under the bed, eating, hugging a bag of bread, “says the mother.
Over time, he began to gain weight and grow. First, it stood out in height. And, little by little, he also gained muscle mass. Medical tests conducted by the boy found a cure for the disease. “We will never have a problem again. His health is too good. “
The Vatican has opened an Ecclesiastical Court to investigate the fact: it has collected testimonies of witnesses and documentary evidence. In November last year, the miracle was accepted by the Catholic Church, which announced the beatification of Carlo Acutis.
At a mass of thanksgiving for the beatification celebrated this Saturday (10) in Campo Grande, Father Marcelo Tenório classified Carlo’s beatification as a sign for the Catholic Church today.
“God wanted to leave Carlo as a great sign for our time. The first sign is that it is possible to live in our time and, at the same time, seek God and sanctify ourselves. That it is possible to use the means of its time as long as nothing can take it out of order. And order leads to God, ”he said.
For Luciana, Matheus’s mother, the miracle and subsequent beatification of Carlo Acutis demonstrate that people must still have faith.
“It is very nice to see that a boy with tennis shoes, a T-shirt, a cell phone and a backpack on his back did a great miracle. It shows that God is taking care of us ”.
Matheus, who also celebrated the beatification, often says that he has a friend in heaven. The mother says, “I feel like you’re in good hands.”
