Xiaomi is expected to be the next mobile device maker to enter the folding smartphone market. According to the rumors reported by the site ZDNet Korea and released by XDA Developers, the Chinese company is developing a model similar to the Galaxy Z Flip and even would have already ordered the screen for mass production.

The company has already requested that Samsung Display be the display provider, with an initial stock of flexible OLED panels in the same vertical format as the South Korean model. LG Display, also strong in the industry, is expected to be the secondary provider of the contract. In addition to popularity, the companies were reportedly selected on merit: Sources who remained anonymous told ZDKorea that the result of manufacturing rival panels, such as BOE and CSOT, did not meet the expected quality standard.

At the beginning of 2019, Xiaomi even published official videos showing a functional folding prototype and even with the president using the device. It had the same format as the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, that is, it became a tablet when it was opened. Furthermore, records suggest that it at least works with the idea of retractable cameras in this product format.

And the look?

For now, there is no speculation about the hardware of the device, but some patents previously registered by Xiaomi that have to do with folding cell phones give an idea of the visual future of the device.

Still at the end of last year, the site WindowsUnited I compiled this information and made some conceptual illustrations of the model, including a video that shows it from all angles, highlighting the similarities not only with the format adopted by Samsung, but also as the Motorola Razr. It is worth remembering that this is only an assumption, without any guarantee that this would be the aspect adopted in the commercial version.

Also according to the report, Xiaomi’s folding shell model would be ready to be mass produced in the second half of 2020, which may indicate an announcement for the end of the year, taking advantage of the Christmas period.
