SAO PAULO – The World Bank Staff Association has requested an investigation into the conduct of Abraham Weintraub on his social networks. The association argues that the director of the institution appointed by the government of Jair Bolsonaro publishes messages with disinformation in the pandemic and political messages, even against governments that are related to the bank, such as the government of the State of São Paulo.

World Bank: worst in deaths and recession, Latin America needs assistance but without neglecting taxation

The news of the representation was anticipated by the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo”, which had access to the letter sent to the World Bank’s Ethics Council. GLOBO confirmed the veracity of the document, dated February 24, where the association says that the conduct of Weintraub, former Minister of Education, should be investigated if it is in accordance with the entity’s Code of Conduct.

It is not clear what type of punishment he may receive, if the Institution’s Ethics Council accepts the investigation request and concludes that it violated the institution’s code of ethics. Wanted, the World Bank does not comment on internal discussions.

Weintraub was also wanted for the report, but did not respond. In a note, the Ministry of Economy said it had not received a communication from the World Bank in this regard.

The association cites several examples of publications by Weintraub, where it defends the use of hydroxychloroquine against Covid-19, despite several studies and the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Mr. Weintraub tweeted several times against the coronavirus vaccine produced by the Butantan Institute, in the state of São Paulo (where the governor of São Paulo is a political opponent of Messrs. Weintraub and Bolsonaro),” states an extract from the letter. , which completes:

Controversial statements: Weintraub is condemned by the Justice in MG for saying that universities manufacture drugs and grow marijuana

“Mr. Weintraub seeks to provide ‘scientific evidence’ to attest that hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment against Covid-19; and states that the multiple mutations of the virus are a clear indication that it was manufactured in the laboratory. Both subjects were discredited by the scientific community ”.

The group of employees also claims that Weintraub violates the institution’s code of conduct by using its social networks to politically attack political enemies, in particular João Doria, the governor of São Paulo. His performance would show a conflict of interest.

Guedes: The new program of reduction of wages and shifts will function as a ‘work insurance’

“Mr. Weintraub appears to be campaigning for political office in Brazil at the same time that he is an employee of the World Bank Group. In fact, it was reported on February 19, at a press conference on our own website, the first line of which is:

“The former Minister of Education, Abraham Weintraub, ran as a candidate for the government of São Paulo, directly from Washington, United States, where he serves as director of the World Bank”, reads the letter.

On December 28, columnist Ancelmo Gois published a note in which he indicated that the director’s conduct annoyed the institution’s employees, especially Brazilians. The former minister’s stance on political criticism and the disclosure of data deemed fake news became more common in the second half of last year, after he was re-elected for another two years in office.

“Weintraub has been criticized in the corridors of the bank for his comments on the social network about the internal politics of other countries that are members of the bank. He is also criticized for comments against Governor João Doria, whom he calls “darling,” and for hints that Doria would use “Botox,” the columnist said at the time.
