The Civil Police of Campinas (SP) today prosecuted Josefa de Souza Mathias, 58, for defaming the body (disrespect for the body) and attempted fraud. She took her husband, Laércio Della Colleta, 92, to a Banco do Brasil branch to do a ‘test of life’ to obtain a new password to operate the bank account, only that he had been dead at least 12 hours before. . The delegate from the city’s 1st Police District listened to two bank employees who witnessed the confusion that occurred on October 2. Josefa arrived with Laércio in a wheelchair, accompanied by a couple of friends, when she asked for a new password to get her husband’s retirement.
He had lost the previous combination and could only obtain it if he had a power or took the man himself: the “proof of life”.
The agency manager found the man’s appearance strange and called a civilian firefighter, who realized that Laércio was dead. Samu and the Fire Department were called in when a doctor raised the suspicion that he had been dead longer than he appeared. The security chief said he saw Josefa agitated.
Yesterday, a report from the Medical Legal Institute requested by the police confirmed that Laércio had been dead for at least 12 hours before being taken to the bank. There was no violence. The document certifies “natural causes” as a reason for death.

According to the director of the Department of Interior Surveillance 2 (Deinter-2), José Henrique Ventura, the neighbor who went with Josefa to the bank also gave testimony today. He said that he did not imagine that Laércio was dead.
“He said that he saw that Laércio was paralyzed, and even questioned Josefa because he had not called Samu. The answer is that he needed to go to the bank to be able to move his bank account, but he did not say that the man had died,” he said. to Twitter.
The door of the building where Josefa lives, which is three blocks from the bank, was also heard. He said he called the neighbor after the resident informed him that Laércio was unwell.
When leaving the police station in the late afternoon, Josefa did not want to speak to the press about the case that had repercussions throughout the country. Defense attorney Andreza Carolina Dias Amador still prefers not to reveal the defense’s strategy. “She denies having tried to apply fraud in her retirement,” he summarized.
Josefa and Laércio had been in a stable union for at least 10 years and the objective of going to the bank was to withdraw the part of the month’s pension. The man did this only until then.
In a note, Banco do Brasil reported that “it has complied with all the protocols established in the service provision contract.”
The institution confirmed that there was no problem with Laércio’s withdrawal, only the lack of credentials to access the account and carry out the withdrawal and, therefore, his presence in the agency was necessary.
Confusion on the date of the appointment
The report questioned the date of the appointment of Laércio as secretary of the Civil Police. The São Paulo Police Officers Association (AEPESP) reported the day before yesterday that it was registered on January 15, 1940. The question is about how old Laércio would be at that time, 12 years.
Today, the report spoke again with the entity and questioned whether there was any error in the date. Two AEPESP databases were consulted, one digital and the other physical, and both contain the same date.
