A health professional from Alaska, United States, had a severe allergic reaction last Tuesday (15) after receiving a dose of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. The side effect of redness and shortness of breath occurred only 10 minutes after dosing.
The professional, whose name was not released, is a middle-aged woman with no history of allergies. She had to be admitted to receive proper treatment and is fine. Last week, two other cases of allergic reaction to Pfizer / BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine were revealed in the UK.
The country’s Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency issued a note requesting that anyone with a history of allergic reaction, whether to the vaccine, drugs or food, should not take the immunizer, as well as those who have a history of anaphylaxis.
The anaphylactic reaction presented by the Alaskan woman is believed to be similar to the two cases in the UK. In one, involving a 49-year-old woman, there was a history of egg allergy, and in the other, the 40-year-old woman has a history of hypersensitivity to different medications, and both wore epinephrine injection devices to monitor the reaction. . However, Pfizer says there are no egg derivatives in the formula’s ingredients.
Moderna has been using ingredients similar to the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines in its vaccines, but there is still not enough information to suggest that the same reactions occur. Both vaccines have a genetic material called mRNA, which is wrapped in a blister made from a mixture of lipids (fats), which are of different types.
Jerica Pitts, a Pfizer spokeswoman, told reporters that the company does not yet have full details of the case, but has been working with health officials to understand what happened. “We will closely monitor all cases that suggest severe allergic reactions after vaccination and update the label language,” he says.
