without humans around, sharks swim ‘at ease’ on the Rio coast

Social isolation measures due to Covid-19 have made the animals “more comfortable”. Even at sea. Reports of sharks very close to the beaches have been circulating in recent days on social networks. One of the films, recorded yesterday Tuesday, shows a group of 15 animals, of the species of black shark, in the blue sea of Angra dos Reis. The recording clearly shows the animals a short distance from the strip of sand, without being “disturbed” by boats, noise, tourists or fishermen.

Author of the image, businessman Cesar Duarte was testing a jet ski near Praia do Laboratório when he was caught by the sharks. He, who was carrying a drone, stopped to film. For about 15 years working on boat trips in Angra, the service interrupted at this time due to the pandemic, César says he has never seen a scene like this:

-Each year, sharks appear. But there were always two, three together. Yesterday it was 15. Some jumped into the water. I have never seen so many sharks together, much less near the beach, he says, impressed. – It could be that there is influence of the quarantine, because there is not much movement of boats in the sea. Tourist operations are prohibited, with the exception of private boats.

Shark specialist Otto Gadig, a professor at the Biosciences Institute at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Une), says yes, they are more visible in this quarantine period. And he warns: there is no danger in that.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of shark sightings, and not in the number of sharks,” says the professor. – To have more sharks we would need many years without fishing. Because they take too long to replace the population. They are animals with slow reproduction. What is happening is that they are taking a break with a little less fishing and less people that somehow cause some disorder in their environment. Sharks are very shy animals and reluctant to human presence, which now feel more comfortable due to less movement of people. Then they are seen approaching the beaches

In the case of the group captured yesterday in Angra, the local hot water, influenced by the activity of the Nuclear Power Plant, is also an attraction for blacktip sharks, which can measure up to three meters.
A whale shark, which can reach 12 meters, was filmed a few days ago by fishermen near Ilha Mãe, in front of the Itaipu beach, in Niterói. Gadig says that the same thing that has been happening to land fauna around the world, with animals coming out of hiding with fewer people present, happens to these animals.

– Whale sharks at that time appear more frequently on the north coast of São Paulo and in Rio. But we had records of one, two. Now, there have been 8 to 9, with images of almost everyone. In Barra de Guaratiba, a few days ago, one came very close to the stones. The explanation is also the least disturbance of the environment – add the master.

Other videos of sharks in Angra and photos of a mako shark killed in Praia or Aventureiro, in Ilha Grande, are also circulating on the networks.
