Has cat in the tuba. Swallow whoever wants the story that Dias Toffoli, Chief Justice, was shocked by Jair Bolsonaro. If so, let him issue a note of protest for being teased: him and the presiding court. He and the court he represents.
The STF is not a pull from the Planalto Palace. If the version circulating there is true, according to which the minister was not in the building, going to the place because he would receive Bolsonaro’s visit, the portrait of the president of the Supreme Court is not at all better. Since, according to this narrative, there was no meeting scheduled, it was up to Toffoli to ask, and they are intimate for this, what was the agenda. After all, what did the President want to talk about?
“Ah, I’m here with a group of businessmen and I want to take you there …” Again: “What for, Jair (I guess they call them by name)?” And then, with minimal honesty, Bolsonaro would tell him that they would ask for the immediate opening of the economy, when the deaths reached the level of 600 occurrences per day, with the collapse arriving or having already reached various capitals. In Rio, the waiting list for ICU beds reaches almost 500 people.
If Toffoli was really misleading for Bolsonaro and didn’t know he was participating in a “life” for his digital militias, let him clarify, then in a note, lamenting the fact that he fell into a kind of trap.
No victims of the disease were discussed at the meeting. The dead were a missing theme. When the expression “UTI” was used, it was a metaphor to refer to the economy. This, I repeat, when we are at the level of 600 fatal cases per day. I am rarely ashamed of being Brazilian. Or, on the other hand, knowing that my compatriots are capable of delivering such a faint-hearted speech.
The meeting comes a day after the Minister of Health, Nelson Teich, admitted that, in certain parts of the country, it will be necessary to even resort to the blockade, which is already taking place in São Luís, Belém and nearby areas. Many people die at home. The evidence of underreporting embarrasses us. No one can be happy with the situation, but then they present an alternative that is not synonymous with sending thousands of poor and black people to collective graves, in stacked coffins.
Bolsonaro is, yes, a much more influential leader than we like to admit. It is the matrix of this behavior and that feeling that ignores the tragedy, turning death into a mere collateral damage of the “functioning of the economy”, as if we were forced to choose between one thing and the other. If there had been adequate social isolation, we could have been more prepared to get out of it.
It is impressive that a chief justice of the Supreme Court receives a president who has no proposal, who does not even respect the guidelines of a health minister who was chosen to go there and say: “The devil is not as ugly as he is painted” . . But the catatonic Teich cannot make that claim because his career is not yet over. You will be demoralized by the numbers. And you will have to work after the end of the government. Although he is now more of an entrepreneur than a doctor, there are traces of his professional ethics.
If Toffoli’s response to the president seemed harsh to some, it is pure misunderstanding. What we saw was the resurrection of the “Pact between the Powers”, something that, until now, I do not know what it means and that, obviously, no one will ever know. Unless someone comes to this type of meeting, making sure that, for some time, we ignore the law in favor of what the Executive Branch, or any other entity, considers efficiency.
This rampant trip from Bolsonaro to the Supreme Court, in that March of the masked men, is one of the most pathetic things, who knows more, than I and anyone has a personal and historical memory. One day that evil spirit will disappear, and many will wonder how they could … And yet they did. Convert the dead into a rate, a percentage, a number. Dehumanize them, subject them to a process of reification, re-objectification. And everything will be easier. Then everything goes through the filter of repression, pretense and arrogance without ballast. And you get to what you saw this Thursday.
The story will be very difficult with certain biographies. Nor does it need to be written with special severity. The facts will suffice.
I conclude by recalling that it is possible to know now why for a long time part of the Brazilian elite did not feel properly represented in the Presidency. None of Bolsonaro’s predecessors, including the military, could do what he did. Part of the capital in Brazil says exactly what it wants and how it thinks that the poor are so black and the blacks are so poor. Brazil is the second most unequal country in the world. He only loses to Qatar. It is unfair. Our sneakers do their best to take you to the first place on the podium.
And the fault of iniquities, of course!, Is social isolation.
