Paris Saint-Germain was again much more fortunate than judgment or good football. Like last week, he won a game that he could have easily lost. But he won. And he left the ropes to be practically classified for the round of 16 of the European Champions League, starting in February.
Manchester United missed at least three incredible chances to score in the second half against Paris today at Old Trafford when the score was tied. PSG ended up finding a goal from Marquinhos, after hitting a rebound – another gigantic goal by the Brazilian defender with the club’s shirt -, made it 2-1 and held on until the end. He also made it 3 to 1 in the counterattack with Neymar.
Now Paris only needs a draw against weak Istanbul Basaksehir, next week, at the Parc des Princes, to qualify. The draw would leave PSG second in the group. The victory places Neymar’s team in first place. Even the losing Paris can still get in, if there is no draw between RB Leipzig and Manchester United in the other group match.
Germans and English will therefore decide the runner-up of the group in direct confrontation. Whoever wins the “final” is inside. Who loses, is out. The tie benefits Manchester United. Leipzig will only draw if PSG lose.
Last week, Neymar’s team had already beaten RB Leipzig in spectacular fashion, undergoing a lot of pressure and holding the result. Today, in Manchester, PSG started the game very well and reached the goal with Neymar. From the middle of the first half, United conceded the score and began to play much better. He tied and, in the last stage, had two incredible lost chances by Martial and a ball off the crossbar by Cavani.
After Marquinhos’ goal, PSG got one more: Fred was sent off. He had a counterattack pulled by Mbappé in which the Frenchman fominha and submitted (out) instead of crossing through Neymar, who was free. Shortly after, there was another counterattack started and ended by Neymar, after the assistance of Rafinha.
Paris breathes a sigh of relief. He suffered a lot, but he gave the answer in the two finals he played. With Neymar and good luck, it’s true. But he did.
