There are lines in Porto Seguro (BA) this New Year’s Eve: landing jets at airports in the region, crossing cars on the ferry, buying drinks at Passarela do Álcool, attending clandestine parties that go against a court order that vetoes the celebrations end of the year for there.

The regional ICU is also congested amid a second wave of Covid-19, with all 30 beds occupied, according to the city.

The city of Bahia is home to the Trancoso district, synonymous with luxury tourism in Brazil. It was in a local luxury condominium, where renting a house for ten days this season could cost R $ 70,000, that the Military Police put an end to a celebration that brought together about 200 people on Saturday (26).

“Sarará”, the name of the event, appeared against a background of a sunset on the beach on the flyer posted on social networks. From there, the PM reached the address and stopped the illegal crowd. The person in charge fled, but was identified and is being searched, according to the Police, who released images of the operation: young people talking without a mask or distance in a property with pools illuminated at night.

On the same day, nearly 50 planes landed at a private airport in Trancoso, causing air traffic, with reports from pilots having to wait more than an hour to land.

The Porto-Segurense ICU has been 100% full since December 13, which did not prevent the city’s press office from telling the leaf that the “epidemiological picture is controlled” in the city of 80 thousand inhabitants. So far, official statistics estimate 81 local deaths from Covid-19.

Business couple Dheferson Assunção, 33, and Camila Souza, 35, left the interior of São Paulo to spend New Year’s Eve in Trancoso.

“We decided to travel this year precisely because we couldn’t travel anywhere in 2020,” he says. “It was a very difficult year. We had already organized this trip since last year. It was only for 15 days. We decided to kick the boat and increase it to 30.”

The duo repeated the tourist destination of the previous year. The difference is that, this time, they try to run tours at alternate times, to avoid crowding peaks, says Dheferson. “At the beginning of the month it was empty, but since Christmas week there are a lot of people here. There are more people than in 2019.”

The architect Thiago Dantas, 29, shared photos hugging with three friends, the quartet with beer in hand in the sea of Bahia. Since he contracted the coronavirus in November, he says he did not think about canceling his stay at a beach club in Trancoso. Traveling companions have also been contaminated.

“We only close New Year’s Eve in December, precisely because we are more relaxed about capturing or broadcasting someone,” he says. There is still no scientific consensus on the ability of people who have been cured to later carry the virus, even if they do not get sick.

While the prime minister raids parties in luxurious vacation homes and also on the outskirts of Porto Seguro, social networks are overflowing with images of people without a mask, with captions such as #trancoseando and #felizdavida. Dheferson, Camila and Thiago, the three tourists with whom the report spoke, assure that they are respecting the health protocol and covering their faces to circulate in public.

On beaches and other open spaces, few stick to the mask, says Dheferson, who excludes those who wear it with their noses open from the count. “In kiosks and huts there is usually live sound. But no dance floor. They usually work with the maximum capacity, which is 200 people ”.

“It will be a different turn of the year, a mixture of hope and fear. I do not know how to express my feelings in words. However, it is to put our faith in God so that this virus ends in 2021,” says Dheferson hours after posting a photo with “o mozão”, Camila, followed by hashtags like #fiesta, #curtindo and #drinks.

Three inns that leaf contacted, like the UCI of Porto Seguro, no longer have room for New Year’s Eve. When the tourists leave Trancoso, the inhabitants of the coastal village, which has an emergency care unit to take care of the most basic health emergencies, will remain.
