The increase in Covid-19 cases already has an impact on the Christmas season in Brazil, with the prohibition of celebrations throughout the month of December, curfews and suspension of alcohol consumption in bars and restaurants. The measures announced in states such as Bahía, Minas, Paraná and Santa Catarina already show how the traditional parties and meetings of the time of year are being affected by the anti-virus measures.
The government of Bahia, for example, yesterday prohibited the holding of concerts and parties, public or private, throughout the state until the 17th, regardless of the number of participants, and with the decision came an “indication” that the measure will be extended. In Paraná, the ban is for parties and gatherings of more than ten people, and the decision includes a curfew from 11 pm to 5 am and suspension of the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in public spaces at that time. The determination is valid for 15 days and began to apply the day before yesterday, Thursday, and may also be renewed. In this way, Santa Catarina will have a curfew and doors closed at 11 pm.
In Belo Horizonte, in a new setback of the reopening of the economy due to the increase in cases of covid-19, the city government yesterday banned the consumption of alcoholic beverages in bars and restaurants, starting Monday. The municipality recommends that no one organize or participate in end-of-year gatherings and there is no invitation to the public for the inauguration of the Christmas lighting. The most famous of them, in Praça da Liberdade, is organized by the state government.
The decree in the capital of Minas Gerais was accompanied by the opening of new beds for the treatment of covid-19. That is, the prediction of the city council is that the situation worsens in the municipality. On Wednesday, the total number of ICU beds for covid was 522, with 256 in the SUS and 266 in the private network. This Thursday, the total number of beds was 553 – 287 in SUS and 266 in private hospitals. There was also an opening for exclusive beds for covid, which totaled 1,221 on Wednesday and 1,302 yesterday.
Emerging cases
The government of Bahia reports that the number of covid cases in the State increases at rates equal to those registered at the peak of the pandemic, between August and October. There are, at least for now, identical figures in relation to deaths, which are around 20 per day; there were 70 at the time of the peak. The state attributes the increase in cases to the early summer holidays. The state bulletin on Thursday reported 3,268 new cases in 24 hours. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 412,685, with 8,336 deaths.
In Paraná, Governor Ratinho Junior (PSD) justified the decree of restrictive measures arguing that “the virus reproduction rate is above the average for the capacity of ICU beds.” And he added that “the expansion of exclusive ICU beds for covid is already in its last stage, with a lack of human resources, supplies and equipment in the current scenario.” Paraná has 291,244 cases, with 6,259 deaths so far.
All decisions were made by decree. In the case of Santa Catarina, the measures are also valid for 15 days and, according to the state government, the text would be published later this week. The measures were taken after a meeting with mayors of the 21 largest cities in Santa Catarina. The state has 378,621 cases of Covid-19, with 3,855 deaths.
In Minas
The sense of urgency is the same in Belo Horizonte, where the city says there was an “intense debate” in the Covid Coping Committee to expand “the rigor in social distance, considering the perceived relaxation of people in bars, restaurants and shows “. – but “allowing the partial operation of the establishments”. Belo Horizonte has 55,039 confirmed cases of the disease, with 1,675 deaths. The mining capital reopens its activities from August 6. As of October 3, the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in bars and restaurants was authorized between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Regarding the holiday lights, the city says the facilities can be licensed, but without disclosure.
Large party clearances are now banned, including New Year’s Eve. The clubs in the city that celebrate this celebration have already begun to announce their cancellation to members.
