Brazil registered 698 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours and showed an accelerating trend in the average of deaths in two of the five regions. Figures come from the most recent press release from the media consortium of which Twitter It is part of.
In total, Brazil has registered 171,497 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic. Across the country, there were 37,672 new cases of covid-19 from yesterday to today. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Brazil has had 6,204,570 positive tests for the disease.
Health data
According to a survey published today by the Ministry of Health, Brazil registered 691 new deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 171,460 deaths from the disease across the country.
From yesterday to today, there were 37,614 positive diagnoses for the new coronavirus in Brazil. The total number of infected people reached 6,204,220 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Still according to the portfolio, 5,528,599 people recovered from covid-19, and another 504,161 were monitored.
Two regions with an upward trend
The data from the media consortium indicates that, with an average of 479 deaths in the last seven days, Brazil had a variation of 19% compared to the same period two weeks ago. This indicates an acceleration in the average number of deaths. Since November 15, the country has been registering consecutive increases.
Ten states showed a tendency to accelerate while another nine and the Federal District showed a decrease. Seven maintained stability.
Of the regions, the Southeast (53%) and the South (16%) showed an upward trend, while the Midwest had a decrease (-40%). Northeast (1%) and North (10%) remained stable.
It is important to note, however, that the increases in some states and regions can be explained by the data blackout the country experienced in early November. On day 6, the platform for the registration of covid-19 deaths of the Ministry of Health began to have problems. Several states reported difficulties entering data on the e-SUS platform and published incomplete or even outdated information for several days.
The state of São Paulo was one of the most affected, with no deaths for five consecutive days. In the next few days, this problem in the system is expected to impact the percentage of an upward, stable or decreasing trend in the affected states and also in the national trend.
To measure the situation of deaths from covid-19, experts indicate that they use the moving average of deaths, which calculates the average of records observed in the last seven days. The operation is the most suitable to observe the trend of the statistics, since it balances the abrupt variations of the numbers throughout the week.
The media consortium adopted this period to verify fluctuations in the moving average. It is possible to speak of a decrease in figures when the decrease is greater than 15% if it is verified in the last 14 days, in this case, the period of the last two weeks. If the numbers rise more than 15%, the epidemic accelerates. Intermediate values indicate stability.

Vehicles gather to obtain information
In response to the decision of the government of Jair Bolsonaro to restrict access to data on the covid-19 pandemic, media Twitter, El Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo, G1 and Extra formed a consortium to work collaboratively to seek the necessary information directly from the state health departments of the 27 units of the Federation.
The federal government, through the Ministry of Health, should be the natural source of these figures, but the attitudes of the authorities and the president himself during the pandemic cast doubt on the availability of the data and its veracity.
