Yesterday (14), Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos beat Paul Felder, number 7 in the lightweight division, by split decision at UFC Las Vegas 14. The Brazilian’s triumph was very important since in his last four fights in the organization MMA main, when he chose to fight at welterweight, he lost three and won only one, against American Kevin Lee with a katagatame submission.
After beating Felder, the 36-year-old veteran challenged Conor McGregor to a fight and the Irishman accepted. Even after the negative streak in the top flight, Dos Anjos returned to lightweight with very good baggage. The fighter was already champion of the category in 2015, when he surpassed nothing more and nothing less than Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis, one of the great names in MMA.
In 2016, McGregor and Dos Anjos would meet on March 5. However, the Brazilian broke his foot in training and the fight must be called off.
A victory over number 7 in the ranking also credits the Brazilian with a good ranking in the category, as in addition to being a former champion, he beat a competitor who said he was looking for the opportunity to contest the belt.
It is worth remembering that the current owner of the light belt is the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, after the victory over Justin Gaethje, the Russian fighter said that he was retiring from MMA, because he was very sad about the death of his father and without him things were much more difficult.
Thus, Rafael Dos Anjos’ path to rediscover the category title would be shorter. But it would take a good winning streak on this comeback.
