Brazilians from 18 state capitals have decided who will be the mayors of the municipalities as of January 1, 2021.
This Sunday, the first to be announced the winner was Edmilson Rodrigues, from Psol, who won in Belém with 51% of the votes.
On this page, BBC News Brazil tells a bit about the story of each of the newly elected officials this Sunday.
Belém (PA): Edmilson Rodrigues (Psol)
The architect and professor Edmilson Rodrigues, 63, was a professor from 1979 to 1984. He began his political career in 1986, as a state deputy, being re-elected to the position in 1990.
He was elected mayor of Belém in 1996 by the PT and re-elected in 2000. He left the Partido dos Trabalhadores in 2005, heading for Psol, founded in September of that year.
In 2006, he unsuccessfully ran for governor, and was again elected state deputy in 2010 and federal deputy in 2014, having been re-elected to office in 2018.
Cuiabá (MT): Emanuel Pinheiro (MDB)
With 51% of the votes, Emanuel Pinheiro (MDB) is elected mayor of Cuiabá.
He, who was already a councilor and a state deputy, came second in the first round and managed to turn around this Sunday.
João Pessoa (PB): Cícero Lucena (PP)
Cícero Lucena (PP) was elected mayor of João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba, with 53.16% of the votes.
With an incomplete higher education in civil engineering, Lucena was mayor, governor and senator of the state of Paraíba.
Recife (PE): João Campos (PSB)
The engineer João Campos (PSB) was elected mayor of Recife, with 56.21% of the votes. Son of Eduardo Campos, who also ruled the state and died in a plane crash while running a presidential campaign in 2014.
In 2018, Campos was the most voted federal deputy in the state of Recife.
Rio de Janeiro (RJ): Eduardo Paes (DEM)
A law graduate, Eduardo Paes (DEM) is elected mayor of Rio de Janeiro, with 64.41% of the votes.
Paes was already deputy mayor, councilor and federal deputy, in addition to serving as mayor of Rio for two terms.
São Luís (MA): Eduardo Braide (Podemos)
Lawyer Eduardo Braide (Pode) was elected mayor of São Luís do Maranhão, with 55.87% of the votes.
Braide’s political career began in 2010, when he was elected state deputy. In 2018, he was elected federal deputy and will resign to take over the city council.
São Paulo (SP): Bruno Covas (PSDB):
The current mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas (PSDB) was re-elected with 59.77% of the votes.
With a degree in Economics and Law, Covas was elected State deputy in 2011.
Grandson of the former governor of São Paulo Mário Covas, he was a deputy of the then governor of São Paulo, João Doria, when he took office as mayor in 2018.
Vitória (ES): Delegate Pazolini (Republicans)
State delegate and deputy Lorenzo Pazolini (Republicans), 38, was elected mayor of Vitória, with 58% of the votes. With a degree in Law, Pazolini has a postgraduate degree in Public Security Management.
Former external control auditor of the Espírito Santo Court of Accounts, Pazolini is a delegate of the Civil Police and was a member of the Police Station for the Protection of Children and Adolescents. In 2018, he was elected for his first term in the State Legislative Assembly.
