The new variant of Covid-19, which originated in southeastern England, has also been identified in Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia, World Health Organization (WHO) technical leader Maria Van Kerkhove said on Sunday (20 ).

“We know that this variant was also identified in Denmark, the Netherlands and there was a case in Australia and it did not spread there,” he told the BBC in a pre-recorded interview.

When asked if he could confirm that the new variant originated or evolved in south-east England, he said: “Yes. Based on the information [o Reino Unido] shared with us, [surgiu] in the southeast of England or in London, yes ”.

He added that “the UK has detected [a existência da nova variante] in September and realized that it had been circulating in the south-east of England since September. “

“It is worrying that the virus is spreading and has so many mutations,” he said.

Kerkhove added: “We understand that the virus does not cause more serious infections based on preliminary information that the UK has shared with us, although these studies are underway to examine hospitalized patients with this variant.”

The expert said that doing more genetic sequencing will be helpful in determining whether this variant is circulating elsewhere.

“The more this virus spreads, the more opportunities it will have to change. So we really need to do everything we can now to prevent it from spreading, “he concluded.
