The match Peru x Brazil this Tuesday night (13), at 9 pm, valid for the 2nd day of the World Cup Qualifiers, already made history before even taking place. Due to a change in the sale of broadcasting rights for national team matches in South America, the match will be the first in the history of the Brazilian team to be broadcast only on a streaming platform, by EI Plus (available via UOL Esporte Clube) Turner, and the YouTube pay channel “El Canal del Futbol”. Globo tried, but couldn’t close a deal in time for the away games. The talks, however, continue.
All the buzz starts when FIFA recommends changing the way games are sold in the region. Instead of negotiating through Conmebol, as it has always been, the highest soccer entity affirms that the rights belong to the local associations, in a kind of “Principal’s Law” for the teams. In other words: the home games of the Colombian team are now owned by the Colombian federation, for example.
With that, Globo managed to close an agreement directly only with the CBF for Brazil’s home matches and with the AFA for Argentina’s matches also as the main one. The other eight teams competing in the qualifiers sold their rights to the Spanish agency Mediapro, which sells the rights to LaLiga, the Spanish league, to the whole world. It is she who dialogues with potential stakeholders, including Globo itself in this situation.
Mediapro did not want to sell solo games, but a complete package for the 72 games that were still available to add value to their product. For that he asked for 20 million dollars. The value was considered very expensive by Globo, especially at a time of a pandemic when the commercial dollar is above the R $ 5.50 mark. The station made a counter offer, just under 50% of what the agency requested. The Spanish company is reluctant to accept the proposal and has not yet given a definitive answer. Without the position, the station stopped making the game on open television.
To give the public the option to watch the game in Brazil, Mediapro sought a partner for the broadcast. The first target was Guigo TV, who gave up. So WarnerMedia / Turner accepted the proposed term. Without paying anything for the rights, Mediapro will only have transferred the funds from the packages that were sold for the match directly: the package costs R $ 19.90. The game will be narrated in Portuguese, with André Henning. The service is available to those who subscribe to UOL Esporte Clube. Due to Mediapro’s contractual requirement, there was no authorization to show the game on TNT, Turner’s channel that generally shows soccer games.
For those who do not care about the Spanish language, Mediapro authorized the YouTube channel “El Canal del Fútbol”, produced in Ecuador, to sell the qualifying matches, including Peru x Brazil, to the Brazilian market. The subscription is more expensive, around R $ 50 per month, and it is not available with narration in Portuguese. The Federal Government tried to contact CBF to show the game on TV Brasil, but heard from the confederation that it could not authorize anything because it did not own the rights.
With this, it will be the first time since 2017 that a game of the Brazilian team will not be broadcast by the Globo team – that year, CBF was slow to renew the contract for the transfer of rights with Globo, which made a friendly match between Brazil x Argentina Se It will be shown on TV Cultura and TV Brasil, as well as on the entity’s Facebook page, with a narration by Nivaldo Prieto. UOL also broadcast that game. Shortly after the game, the deal was closed for between $ 2 million and $ 3 million.
