Amid the storm of criticism for admitting in a book that he represented the Army High Command when, in 2018, he tweeted to intimidate the Federal Supreme Court on the eve of the habeas corpus trial of former President Lula, the former commander of the force, General Eduardo Villas Bôas, appeared on television yesterday. The topic that he addressed in the program “Conversa com Bial”, however, was another.
To encourage the public to get vaccinated against covid-19, the TV Globo attraction produced a special about Zé Gotinha, a character who for 34 years has been fundamental in immunization campaigns. Several personalities were invited to speak about the importance of vaccination and Villas Bôas was one of them.
After recalling that the Military Dictatorship prohibited the dissemination of information on the meningitis epidemic in the 1970s, and then imported 80 million vaccines, Bial gave the floor to the general.
Trapped in a wheelchair and unable to speak due to the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis that affected him, he used a computerized voice to communicate. What he said should not have sounded good to the ears of President Jair Bolsonaro, whose government Villas Good participates as an advisor to the Institutional Security Office.
First, he made a general criticism, which can serve both Bolsonaro and the governor of São Paulo, João Doria. The two who had discussions about CoronaVac.
“We regret to see that, at this critical time for our society, disagreements that do not bring any benefit to the people prevent Zé Gotinha from having everyone’s support to continue working for us,” said Villas Bôas. “I wish I was successful again.”
In the next participation, the reprimand seemed to fit perfectly with the irresponsible acts of the president and his negative followers.
After saying that he will soon be in line to get vaccinated, Villas Bôas commented: “I am surprised to see how even enlightened people are influenced by conflicting news. If it wasn’t enough, they still help spread rumors.”
Not so clear, but totally influenced by “conflicting news,” Bolsonaro was the main character in spreading rumors about the vaccine.
Occupying the most important position in the country, he later doubted the effectiveness of the immunizers, cheered against the vaccine produced at the Butantan Institute (even saying that he had won the dispute with Doria, after the death of a volunteer), repeating that he will not be vaccinated, discards the obligation and considers as an adverse effect the possibility of someone becoming an alligator.
Following the leader, the social media bolsonaristas were the main propagators of fake news about CoronaVac, which they pejoratively called “vachina.”
As if so many strange things weren’t enough, a few hours before the general appeared on Bial’s show, Bolsonaro made one more contribution to dissuade Brazilians from getting immunized. He said in his weekly live that those who “enter the pile of vaccines, only the vaccine” are “useful idiots.”
After taking office, the president alluded to the reserved conversations he had with Villas Bôas during the campaign. He declared publicly in solemnity: “You are responsible for my being here.”
If it is consistent with what he told Bial, the general must regret having run over the institutions to help elect Bolsonaro.
With more than 240 thousand dead in the pandemic and close to the country beating the daily record of deaths, the greatest enemy of Zé Gotinha continues to be the President of the Republic.
