President Jair Bolsonaro said, on his Facebook page on Tuesday (20), that Brazil will not buy “the vaccine from China.”
The statement was made in response to a follower on the social network who called for the dismissal of the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello. “Good morning, President. Urge Pazuelo urgently, he is being the elector of Doria. The minister has betrayed him,” wrote the follower.
The same day earlier, the Health Ministry had announced the purchase of 46 million doses of CoronaVac, a vaccine developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac. The company has an agreement with the government of São Paulo to supply the ready for the vaccine and also for him production technology transfer Butantan Institute (see details below).
“Everything will become clear today. We will not buy the vaccine from China,” the president said.
The agreement with Butantan provides for the purchase of the same 46 million doses. Of these, according to the institute, 6 million will come from China and 40 million will be completed in Brazil. It is not clear what dose Bolsonaro is referring to when he says he will not buy vaccines in China.
According to Andréia Sadi’s blog, Bolsonaro was irritated by the announcement of the Pazuello agreement and overruled the minister. Asked by the blog if the government will withdraw from the decision to buy vaccines, government sources say Plateau will discuss the matter.
This Wednesday morning (21), the website “Poder360” indicated that the president sent a message to the ministers saying that he would not buy “vaccines from China”.

According to Dimas Covas, director of Butantan, by the end of the year the institute would have 46 million doses ready.
The agreement included, in addition to the purchase of doses, a transfer of technology so that the institute could manufacture them in Brazilian territory as of 2021.
The São Paulo government also announced the forecast of acquiring an additional 15 million doses by February 2021, reaching a total of 61 million with its own funds. The expectation was that, with money from the federal government, another 40 million would be acquired, reaching 100 million in May 2021.
