“We do not give space to homophobia”

In a “clarification” released at the beginning of “Jornal da Tarde” this Wednesday (11), TV Cultura criticized President Jair Bolsonaro for two statements made the day before.

“In this edition, this is the only time you will hear the words ‘gunpowder’ and ‘ladybugs.’ A hypothetical war between Brazil and the United States is contrary to all logic. We do not give space to homophobia. And 162 thousand deaths do not admit any adjective of a platform, only an attitude of confrontation to save lives, “said Aldo Quiroga, who shares the bench with Joyce Ribeiro and is also the editor-in-chief of the news.

The presenter referred to two speeches by the president. In the first, speaking of an eventual second wave of covid-19 in Brazil, Bolsonaro said: “It has to stop being a country of ladybugs.” The second, “when you run out of saliva, you have to have gunpowder,” was in response to possible pressure from the next US president, Joe Biden, on environmental policy.

Quiroga completed the clarification saying: “We spent 30 seconds with the fun of today. Now let’s go to the news that can really change your life.”

The critical tone, well balanced, deserves praise. It was a comment consistent with the president’s statements. One wonders if the newscast would adopt the same tone in relation to Governor João Dória. TV Cultura, managed by the Fundación Padre Anchieta, is linked to the government of São Paulo.

Bolsonaro considers Dória a rival. On Tuesday, the president celebrated Anvisa’s decision to suspend research on the Coronavac vaccine, carried out by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac in alliance with the Butantan Institute, linked to the São Paulo government. Anvisa authorized the resumption of the investigation on Wednesday.
